I was quite surprised to see the impact of the economic crisis on the orphanages and poor families. Over the last few years I have seen a steady improvement in the orphanages and internats but this time you could see that many were financially struggling again. In some of the schools and orphanages I visited the heating was turned off and the children had to sleep in the cold.

One of the great challenges we all face is not to be overwhelmed with the need. We partner with people like Viktor to support and enlarge their ministries. Viktor is excellent at not only helping a large number of orphans and children from poor families but also in personalising support for individuals.

Another great challenge we all face is to make sure we keep a good balance between proclaiming the gospel as well as relieving poverty.

Whenever I visit the children I always do my best to present a gospel story. Over the years I have developed a programme that includes tricks, games and Bible stories. A friend in Southampton, who has a wonderful artistic gift, draws pictures for me. The children love her pictures and it makes it so easy to communicate the gospel. One of the great highlights for me is to hear children praying at the end that they want to follow Jesus.

In addition to proclaiming the gospel we take biscuits or bananas for the children.

We also provide financial support for local believers to visit the children and teach them about following Jesus. Where possible Viktor also organises transport for the orphans to go to church.

In addition to all this Viktor has 100 large families living in very poor conditions that he is helping.
